This first version of an Iconclass Browser was incorporated in an application demonstrated at Leiden university in 1989.
Lutz Heusinger (editor), Marburger Informations-, Dokumentations- und Administrations-System (MIDAS). (München, New York, London, 1989). In particular pp. 361-424: 60 Ikonographie und die ICONCLASS-Datei
The Iconclass system was integrated in the original HIDA-MIDAS application
The "Leiden" file.
Backup of a complete Iconclass text file on diskette, March 8th 1990. Personal copy of Hans Brandhorst; pre-dates the period at Computer & Letteren...
Note the directory name: \iconclas - not a typo, but compliant with the DOS restrictions of 8 positions for a directory name...
"arj" zipped copies of the Leiden, Marburg and Witt Iconclass files in the AskSam format of the early 90's.

Structured text files (ASCII) resulting from the OCR applied to the Bibliography volumes of Iconclass, of which no computer files existed in 1990.
A set of the bibliography volumes was cut up, scanned and OCR'd and then the resulting raw scan-data were converted into structured text files. In the process the inconsistencies between the volumes, compiled and published over a period of 10 years, were manually corrected. The process took circa 18 months to complete.

Early 1990's:
Original Iconclass Browser. DOS version (Bracmat, C++). Not published as a standalone application, but used as the core library for the CD-ROM versions.
Editing of the Iconclass files and assisting with the design of the browser: Brandhorst & van Huisstede.
Bracmat programming: Bart Jongejan, supervised by Jörgen van den Berg

1991: Dutch Printer's Devices 1.0.
Before it was made available as a standalone edition, the first Windows (3.1) version of Iconclass was tested as part of a pictorial information system. The Koninklijke Bibliotheek and the Utrecht Department of Computer & Letteren joined forces to produce a CD-ROM of Dutch Printer's Devices, made accessible iconographically with the help of a complete version of the Iconclass system. It was created by Peter van Huisstede, Hans Brandhorst, Ger Duijfjes-Vellekoop, Bart Jongejan, Jacques Broeren.
Supervision: Jörgen van den Berg

1992: Iconclass 2000, first Windows
standalone edition on CD-ROM
A Windows Graphic User Interface (3.1, then 95) was built on top of the original (DOS) Iconclass browser 'engine'. The Bibliography was incorporated in this edition.
Cumulative design and programming by the C&L team, consisting of:
Peter van Huisstede, Hans Brandhorst, Ger Duijfjes-Vellekoop, Bart Jongejan, Jacques Broeren.
Supervision: Jörgen van den Berg

1992: Iconclass on CD-ROM
Browser User's Guide

CD-ROM series incorporating the Iconclass system

These CD-ROM's were all produced by the Iconclass team of Computer & Letteren for KG Saur, the Courtauld Institute and De Graaf Publishers. All CD's contain a database management application, a dataset of pictures, and the complete Iconclass system as a linked and embedded object (OLE).
The CD-ROM Dutch Printer's Devices 15th - 17th century contained the definitive version of the catalogue of which the first pilot had been published in 1991.

1999-2000: Iconclass "Libertas" Browser 1.0 (first online Browser edition)
Design and Programming: Etienne Posthumus, supervised by Jörgen van den Berg at the Computer & Letteren Department of Utrecht university, on behalf of the Iconclass Research & Development Group.

2000-2005: Iconclass "Libertas" Browser. 2.0
Made available to the Royal Academy by Etienne Posthumus, who also took care of maintenance and occasional corrections. From 2006 replaced by the present version

2006 ...
Iconclass Browser, replacing the "Libertas" Browser. Design and Programming: Etienne Posthumus. Content editing: Hans Brandhorst.
Developed from 2006 onwards. Its stylesheet and some functionalities were adapted for the official launch in collaboration with RKD, in 2009.

Finnish translation and browser
A partial translation of the Iconclass system in Finnish, as part of the Finto.fi open service for the publication and use of vocabularies, ontologies and classifications with an objective to promote interoperability. Finto.fi offers a browsing interface for vocabularies as well as open APIs for their integration into other applications. Finto AI provides a user interface and API for automated subject indexing.
N.B.: The Finto browser uses a hybrid approach, mixing hierarchical browsing with the alphabetical display of concept definitions. Iconclass system features like keys (+) are not included in the browsing system.

Italian translation
The only translation that has been published in printed form is the Italian version, compiled and edited by Marco Lattanzi, Simona Ciofetta and Elena Plances.
It was published in 2000 by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione.
