Beeldleer scope note

In visual perception, an optical illusion is an illusion caused by the visual system and characterized by a visual percept that arguably appears to differ from reality.

Optical illusion art, or Op art, is an abstract art style that uses geometric shapes, patterns, and color to create illusions of movement, depth, and distortion, tricking the eye into seeing more than what is actually there. Popular in the 1960s with artists like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, Op art plays on how the brain perceives images, with effects such as vibrating patterns, swelling forms, and a sense of motion on a flat surface.
